1940-49
Galam was registered as a company by the Kibbutz Movement on April 8, 1940, to provide employment for the newly established kibbutzim in the area. In 1943 production began with refining starch and producing glucose syrup from sorghum imported from Syria (1.5 ton daily). In 1949, the raw material used became corn (maize) from the USA, at a grind-rate of 3 tons a day.
1950-59
In 1953, a facility was built that produced sweet potato starch for the textile industry. In 1957, the facility was converted to produce potato starch for food and industry. Cornstarch was made during the off-season. Glucose syrup was exported to Africa. The total annual production was 400 tons of starch.
1960-69
Caramel color, pregel, modified starches, starches for corrugated board and paper industries were produced. A patent was issued on in-situ production of starch for paper sizing. Modern equipment replaced starch tabelling. A steep water evaporator enables a closed counter-current process with a higher yield. The grind-rate was 40 tons corn a day. The consumer packaging plant moved from Tel Aviv to Galam.
1970-79
Galam became a government authorized exporter. Processing equipment was purchased to increase production. A know-how agreement was signed with a large European starch producer. The potato starch unit was closed. The grind-rate was 90 tons corn a day. The first computer unit was installed in the bookkeeping department.
1980-89
Plant production processes were computerized. The new consumer packaging plant was built. The erection and operation of the fructose production facility. Export of Crystalline Fructose to Europe. Galam established a Board of Directors.
1990-99
Fructose production was enlarged tenfold. Galam created its Vision and ISO 9002 Certification was received. Nutragal was established to supply minerals for enrichment and fortification.
2000-07
Galam celebrated 60 years since its establishment. GMP, HAACP and BRP certifications were received. An ERP system was introduced. Galam invested in Enzymotec, a biotechnology start-up developing and manufacturing healthy life style products, for heart health and mental function. Galam establishes Galam Group, with new companies in Europe, and is now in the process of examining new mergers and acquisitions.
